What Are the Different Types of Grill Covers?

I personally group grill covers according to the material.

They come in several different types of materials. Right away, this is a clue that not all grill covers should go on your grill.

Here are the different materials of grill covers:

  • Vinyl
  • Polyester
  • Canvas

Vinyl

I’ve had a lot of experience buying vinyl grill covers. At my first purchase, I wanted something that would keep my grill dry.

By dry, I mean absolutely dry.

Vinyl is excellent for keeping moisture off your grill.

These are so waterproof that I can leave these out in the rain and not think twice about it.

Often, vinyl grill covers are thick and dense. I guess they have to be. After all, they need to protect grills from rain and snow.

Polyester

Lightweight and easy to fold, polyester grill covers are popular.

Sure, they don’t offer as much insulation as vinyl covers, but I’ve found them to be adequate.

Besides, in my experience, polyester holds up nicely against both snow and direct sunlight.

Canvas

Sometimes, polyester grill covers are not available. Canvas is another choice.

It offers part of the protection vinyl does.

It isn’t as lightweight as polyester, but it’s still lighter than a dense vinyl cover.

Due to its makeup, a canvas grill cover protects from one more danger. It is fireproof.

Oh, did I mention that it is also cheaper than polyester?

What Do You Look for in the Best Grill Covers?

With hundreds, if not thousands, of grill covers to choose from, how can I narrow them down to the top 5 best?

I’ve made it a point to choose based on:

  • Size
  • Budget
  • Material
  • Warranty
  • Any Added Features

Size

If I have a grill that is about three feet off the ground, why choose a cover that’s four feet? It’s just a waste of fabric and money.

Look for a grill cover that will safely fit your grill without being too big.

Budget

I think this needs little to no explanation. All things being equal, I think it’s practical to go with what’s economical.

Material

Different material= Different outdoor conditions.

  • If it rains a lot where you live, go for vinyl.
  • Is it hot and humid where you are? Flip the coin on either polyester or canvas!

Warranty

If something breaks, I want to be able to get it repaired for free. I think you will agree.

If two grill covers are equal in all ways except a warranty being offered for one, make the smart choice and get the warranty.

Any Added Features

I know. All grills grill. But some come with additional features?

Maybe the grill comes with some storage areas or wheels. Your cover should be able to properly protect these additional features as well.

Our Reviews Of The Best Grill Covers

Once you’ve purchased a nice grill, the next logical step is to protect that investment.

Buying a grill cover should be easy, right? Well, if you’ve made it this far in the blog, it’s apparent that choosing the right grill cover is important to you.

Here are the top 5 best grill covers:

Pick #1: Unicook Grill Cover

This particular grill cover measures 50 inches wide. From top to bottom, it is about 22 inches.

Though, they do have other sizes available, which you’ll see when you visit the link to Amazon.

It’s made of vinyl material on the inside and polyester on the outside. So, this grill cover is as water repellent and fade resistant as they come.

It also comes with fabric handles on the sides. These make grill covering easy.

For me, it has what I would want in a grill cover.

Pros

  • No Water Leaking
  • Fade Resistant
  • Handles and Straps
  • Several Different Sizes, Shapes, and Colors To Choose From

Cons

  • Because it fits multiple sizes and different brand grills, you have to measure your grill before buying to ensure a proper fit.

Pick #2: Simple Houseware

This is arguably the best polyester grill cover out there.

It’s lightweight and low maintenance.

Don’t let its lightweight material fool you. Simple Houseware’s Grill Cover offers the most bang for your buck, especially when it comes to rain protection.

From experience though, I wouldn’t leave it in the sun too long. You’ll likely get quite a bit of fading.

At most, you could probably get about six months out of it. You can probably get it to last longer if you keep your grill in the shade.

Pros

  • Protects great against the rain
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Great budget option

Cons

  • Fades very easily
  • If it’s in the elements, plan on replacing it each year

Pick #3: Grillman

Talk about a one-size-fits-all cover.

The Grillman Premium Grill Cover can accommodate nearly all sizes.

Unlike most grill covers, the material is highly synthetic.

Grillman has used a PVC-based Oxford material for the grill cover. This makes the cover one of the most heavy-duty on the market today.

They come in many different shapes and sizes, so you’ll likely find one that is perfect for your grill.

Its fabric hook and loop straps make it fit securely and prevents it from blowing off in the wind.

I only take issue with one thing: it protects from the weather extremely well and it’s durable, but it fades.

Pros

  • Very Heavy Duty Material
  • Fits Most Grill Brands
  • Wind Resistant

Cons

  • The Color Can Fade If Left In The Sun

Pick #4: Kingkong

Here is another heavy-hitter in grilling accessories.

True, King Kong’s 7130 was meant for certain types of grills.

But, I’ve found that it fits most grills.

It is made of polyester. So, no need to even sweat water and UV protection.

As an extra bonus, this grill cover comes with additional accessories.

These include an instant-read thermometer, a pair of tongs, and a grill brush for maintenance.

Pros

  • Good Water and UV Protection
  • Heavy-Duty Design
  • Comes With Accessories

Cons

  • Specifically made for the Weber Genesis 300 Series, but the size still may fit your grill

Pick #5: Unicook – Lightweight

This isn’t a typo. Unicook is listed twice. This time, it’s for their lightweight model.

I might be biased. But, Unicook does come out with amazing grill covers.

The company’s basic grill cover is the less-heavy duty version.

What I love most is the velcro strap that goes around the sides.

Unstrapped, this grill cover measures about 30 inches in width. But, for a smaller grill, you can use the strap to fold the excess fabric.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Strong Velcro Straps
  • Fade Resistant
  • Fits Multiple Sizes and Multiple Brands

Cons

  • Must measure your grill first to ensure proper fit

What Are Grill Covers?

Imagine not having a garage. If you wanted to protect your car from rain, what would you do?

You would cover it with a car cover, right?

A grill cover is like a car cover except it isn’t for your car or truck. It’s for your grill.

Here’s the thing. A grill is generally left outside. Because of this, it is susceptible to the elements.

If you live in a place where it snows abundantly, you have more to worry about.

In general, a grill cover protects your grill from moisture and humidity. These elements can radically shorten the lifespan of your grill.

This is why I have become a grill cover connoisseur of sorts. I want your investment to last a lifetime!

My Final Thoughts On Grill Covers

Invest in a quality grill cover. It can add years to the lifespan of a grill. And, as I’ve found, it is an investment I don’t regret.

And as a safety tip, never put your cover on the grill while it’s still hot.

  • Vinyl fabric will begin to warp and melt at temperatures as low as 180ºF.
  • Polyester and canvas can easily catch fire if placed on a hot grill

If anything does happen to your grill, even if it’s got a cover on, like falling branches or a fire, review your insurance policy. It may be covered.

In an actual emergency with active fire, please contact 911.

1 thought on “5 Best Grill Covers (2023 Review)”

  1. Hi Shawn,

I have a Weber Genesis Gold series grill. The original Weber cover has just now given up the ghost, after almost 16 yrs of use. Which specific cover do you think will work the best with it? I like black covers that don’t fade. I couldn’t find a Unicook model that fits my grill well. Kingkong has one, but fading is an issue. I’m definitely looking for durability.

    Thanks in advance!
    Kathleen
